Ons leven is een reis... 4e zondag van Pasen A
Zaterdagmiddag 2 mei was ik in de Lourdeskapel in Zwaag voor een Eucharistieviering met de Filippijnse gemeenschap. Daar vierden we tevens de verjaardag van iemand die zich in ons bisdom en daarbuiten inzet als missionaris voor de devotie voor de Goddelijke barmhartigheid.
Saturday afternoon, 2nd of May, I visited the Lourdeschapel in Zwaag for the celebration of the holy Eucharist with the Philippine community. There we celebrated the special birthday of Malou Pimentel, a person who in our diocese and elsewhere dedicates herself to be a missionary of the Divin Mercy.

LIFE IS A JOURNEY
HOLY MASS IN ZWAAG - LOURDES CHAPEL - MALOU PIMENTEL’S 70TH BIRTHDAY
Dear Malou, Monsignor, brothers and sisters,
A Journey
We are all on a journey;
as is often said:
life is a journey.
And when we reach a certain age,
looking back on the life behind us,
we see difficult moments and joys.
Gratitude
But above all, we look back with gratitude,
doing so in the conviction
that God guides all things
and that we are called
to discover the hand of God
in the beautiful, joyful things,
just as much as in what was difficult,
and finally to say:
Good Lord, in Your mercy
You have cared for me,
guided my life
and brought me to this day.
Thank You, Lord!
And grant us the strength and the special grace
to accept everything that comes
and whatever happens,
sickness and health,
prosperity and adversity,
as coming from Your hand.
You never leave us alone,
in that we trust.
Be not troubled
The Holy Gospel we heard
began precisely with these words,
which Jesus spoke to His disciples,
before He was to suffer and die on the cross
for us:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled”.
That is a word for us too:
whatever happens,
turn to trust,
your life is in God’s hands,
He has prepared a place for you,
here on earth - that concerns your vocation -
and in the hereafter.
“I am the way and the truth and the life”,
says Jesus today.
Jesus is the way we are called to walk
to reach the goal,
which is: Life, eternal life.
Our way is that
of following Jesus Christ.
Our trips and the one way...
He Himself thus compares our life to a journey,
to a voyage, since He is the way.
Now you may have made trips
to many places in the world;
just like Ruud and Malou,
you have made many journeys.
But whatever journey you undertake,
in truth your path is always the same:
for whatever you do and wherever you go,
your path is the following of Jesus Christ.
Baggage
In everything we undertake
and whatever happens along the way,
our spiritual baggage matters enormously.
What have you been given?
What do you carry with you?
What are the sources from which you draw?
Very often, it is a matter of spiritual baggage
that we have already been given from our upbringing
and, along the way,
we have gained enriching experiences
and acquired more spiritual baggage.
Let us also pause in gratitude
to reflect on the beautiful, grace-filled experiences
that were given to us
and on all the people who played a part in them.
They are all signs
of God’s mercy.
That spiritual baggage
with which we make our life’s journey,
our pilgrimage through life.
They are the values of our hearts,
our faith, our bond with God,
with the blessed Virgin Mary,
all the values we were given in our upbringing
or which we have later made our own:
they make a great difference to the path we take.
Unpleasant experiences
Thank You, Lord, yes, thank You also
for painful and unpleasant experiences,
for they too have shaped us
and they shape us in a positive way
if we can bring ourselves to say:
“Lord, from Your hands I accept this,
even though it was difficult and painful;
You are the strength of my life,
I shall go on with You by my side.
May Your mother Mary be my support in this.”
Two great gifts
The good Lord has given us
two particularly important gifts in this regard,
as help, strength and encouragement.
The first and greatest gift
is the Holy Eucharist and Holy Communion:
on the path of our lives,
the Lord Himself walks with us.
The second great gift
is His mother Mary,
whom Jesus gave to us on the cross.
The month of May has begun
the month of Our Lady
and we are here in the chapel
of Our Lady of Lourdes.
In these gifts
and in all the little gifts that have come our way,
we recognise God’s hand,
His mercy.

Dear Malou,
heartfelt congratulations,
thank you for your great dedication to the apostolate
of Divine Mercy.
Walk safely and well
the path of Jesus Christ,
under the protection of our Mother Mary;
thus you will one day reach the goal,
eternal Life.
We zijn op weg
(HEILIGE MIS IN ZWAAG - LOURDESKAPEL - MALOU PIMENTEL 70 JAAR
Dear Malou, Monsignor, brothers and sisters,
We zijn allemaal op weg;
dat wordt inderdaad vaak zo gezegd:
het leven is een reis.
En als we op een zekere leeftijd gekomen,
omkijken naar het leven dat achter ons ligt,
zien we moeilijke momenten en vreugden.
Maar bovenal kijken we terug met dankbaarheid,
dat doen we in de overtuiging
dat God alles leidt
en dat we geroepen zijn
om in de mooie, vreugdevolle dingen,
net zo goed als in wat moeilijk was,
de hand van God te ontdekken
en tenslotte te zeggen:
Goede God, in uw barmhartigheid
hebt Gij voor mij gezorgd,
mijn leven geleid
en mij gebracht tot deze dag.
Dank U, Heer!
En geef ons de kracht en de bijzondere genade
om alles wat komt
en wat er gebeurt,
ziekte en gezondheid,
voor- en tegenspoed
uit Uw hand aan te nemen.
U laat ons nooit alleen,
daarop vertrouwen wij.
Het heilig evangelie dat we hoorden
begon precies met deze woorden,
die Jezus sprak tot Zijn leerlingen,
voordat Hij zou gaan lijden en aan het kruis
voor ons zou sterven:
“Laat je hart niet ontsteld worden”.
Dat is een woord ook voor ons:
wat er ook gebeurt,
ga naar het vertrouwen,
je leven is in Gods hand,
Hij heeft een plaats voor je bereid,
hier op aarde - dat gaat over je roeping -
en in het hiernamaals.
“Ik ben de weg en de waarheid en het leven”,
zegt Jezus vandaag.
Jezus is de weg die wij mogen gaan
om het doel, het Leven, eeuwig leven,
te bereiken.
Onze weg is die
van de navolging van Jezus Christus.
Hijzelf vergelijkt ons leven dus met een reis,
met een tocht.
Nu ben je misschien
al op vele plaatsen in de wereld geweest,
misschien heb je, net als Ruud en Malou,
vele reizen gemaakt.
Maar welke reis je ook onderneemt,
eigenlijk is je weg altijd dezelfde:
want wat je ook doet en waar je ook gaat,
je weg is de navolging van Jezus Christus.
Bij alles wat we ondernemen
en wat er onderweg gebeurt,
telt enorm onze geestelijke bagage.
Wat heb je meegekregen?
Wat draag je mee?
Wat zijn de bronnen waar je uit put?
Heel vaak gaat het om een geestelijke bagage
die we van huis uit al hebben meegekregen
en ook hebben we gaandeweg
verrijkende ervaringen opgedaan
en hebben we geestelijke bagage verworven.
Laten we ook in dankbaarheid stil staan
bij de mooie, genadevolle ervaringen
die ons werden gegeven
en bij alle mensen die daar een rol in hebben gespeeld.
Het zijn allemaal tekens
van Gods barmhartigheid.
Die geestelijke bagage
waarmee we onze levensreis maken,
onze pelgrimstocht door het leven.
Zijn de waarden van ons hart,
ons geloof, onze band met God,
met de Maagd Maria,
alle waarden die we in onze opvoeding hebt meegekregen
of die we ons later hebben eigen gemaakt:
ze maken een groot verschil voor de weg die we gaan.
Dank U, Heer, ja dank U ook
voor pijnlijke en nare ervaringen,
ook die hebben ons gevormd
en ze vormen ons in positieve zin
als we ertoe kunnen komen om te zeggen:
“Heer, uit Uw handen neem ik dit aan,
al was het moeilijk en pijnlijk;
U bent de kracht van mijn leven,
ik ga verder met U aan mijn zijde.
Moge Uw moeder Maria mij daarbij tot steun zijn”.
De goede God heeft ons daarbij
twee bijzonder belangrijke cadeaus gegeven,
als hulp, als kracht en bemoediging.
Het eerste en grootste cadeau
is de heilige Eucharistie en de heilige communie:
op de weg van ons leven,
trekt de Heer zelf met ons mee.
Het tweede grote cadeau
is Zijn moeder Maria,
die Jezus op het kruis aan ons heeft gegeven.
De meimaand is begonnen
de maand van moeder Maria
en we zijn hier in de kapel
van Onze Lieve Vrouw van Lourdes.
In in deze geschenken
en in alle cadeautjes die op ons pad zijn gekomen,
herkennen we Gods hand,
Zijn barmhartigheid.
Beste Malou,
van harte proficiat,
bedankt voor je grote inzet voor het apostolaat
van de Goddelijke barmhartigheid.
Ga veilig en goed
de weg van Jezus Christus,
onder de bescherming van onze Moeder Maria;
zo zul je eens het doel,
het eeuwig Leven
bereiken!)
