Aartsbisschop Gallagher krijgt eigen tulp

Nieuwe ridder in de orde van sint Gregorius de Grote benoemd

Aarts­bis­schop Paul Gallagher had zater­dag­avond 1 juli een ont­moe­ting met enkele ver­te­gen­woor­digers van bisdom en van stich­tingen binnen het bisdom Haar­lem-Am­ster­dam. Daarbij werd de naam van een nieuwe tulp-soort ont­huld. Zondag was de Aarts­bis­schop in de Haar­lemse ka­the­draal voor de Eucha­ris­tie­vie­ring en ont­moe­ting met gasten en kerk­gan­gers. Ridder Gregorius

Na de prach­tige Evensong in de basiliek van Sint Nicolaas in Am­ster­dam was er een ont­moe­ting in de pastorie van de Basiliek en bij een rond­vaart met een kleine groep mensen waar­on­der de heer Reinier Russel van wie ik bekend kon maken dat hij van­wege zijn ver­diensten op velerlei gebied door paus Fran­cis­cus was benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van St. Gregorius de Grote, ee hoge ker­ke­lijke onder­schei­ding. De heer Russel is bij vele kerk­be­stuurs­le­den bekend van­wege zijn inzet voor de organi­sa­tie van en deelname aan de besturen­cur­sus, een cursus voor (aanstaande) kerk­be­stuurs­le­den en be­stuurs­le­den van Parochiële Caritas In­stel­lingen. Dit was alleen een eerste aan­kon­di­ging. Later zal de offi­cië­le uit­rei­king volgen. Op de foto onder ziet U hem naast bidomeconoom Thom van der Steen MBA.

Stich­ting Ka­the­drale Basiliek

Ook de nieuwe voor­zit­ter de Stich­ting Ka­the­drale Basiliek, de heer mr. Hugo Reumkens was aanwe­zig. Op de foto onder ziet U hem samen met bis­schop mgr.Jozef Punt. De Stich­ting zet zich in voor het on­der­houd en andere aspecten van de ka­the­draal.

Mgr. Hoogen­boom

Mede namens kar­di­naal Willem Eijk was mgr. Ted Hoogen­boom aanwe­zig, hulp­bis­schop en vica­ris-generaal van het aarts­bis­dom. Mgr. Hoogen­boom is voor­zit­ter van de Legal Affairs Commission van COMECE, een organi­sa­tie in Brussel die de bis­schop­pen­con­fe­ren­ties van de lan­den van de Europese ge­meen­schap ver­te­gen­woor­digt. Op de foto onder is hij te zien met de deken van Am­ster­dam, Eric Fennis.

Tulp

Tijdens de boot­tocht heb ik samen met de heer mr. Paul Russel, voor­zit­ter van KSBW, een nieuwe tulpsoort mogen aanbie­den die de naam "Archbishop Paul Gallagher" zal dragen. De kleuren zijn paars en wit, waarbij de paarse kleur staat voor situaties in de wereld die droevig stemmen en vaak uit­zichtloos lijken, omdat we niet zon­der reden denken dat er nooit een einde zal komen aan onrecht en geweld... Paars is ker­ke­lijk de kleur van uit­vaar­ten, vasten en lij­den. Toch is er hoop. Dat uit zich in de witte kleur, de kleur van de ver­rij­ze­nis. We moeten die hoop nooit opgeven maar blijven geloven dat een betere toe­komst moge­lijk is. Dat is een niet ge­mak­ke­lijke taak voor de aarts­bis­schop die in de relaties met de staten de bood­schap van vrede, ver­zoe­ning, een beter klimaat en broe­derchap van alle mensen naar voren brengt.

Eucha­ris­tie in de ka­the­draal

Op zon­dag heeft de Aarts­bis­schop de Eucha­ris­tie gevierd in de ka­the­draal, waarbij onder meer ook de Com­mis­sa­ris van de Koning, Arthur van Dijk aanwe­zig was. Na de Mis kwam ook burge­mees­ter Jos Wienen voor een ont­moe­ting met de Aarts­bis­schop.

Hier­on­der is ook de homilie van de Aarts­bis­schop na te lezen. Daarin werd bij­zon­der stil gestaan bij de afschaf­fing van de slavernij in Suriname en de Neder­landse Antillen.

Wie waren er?

Mgr. Karel Kasteel was even­eens uit Rome geko­men en con­ce­le­breerde naast vica­ris generaal mgr. Bart Putter, Vica­ris André van den Hout, mgr. Luciano Alimandi, seceta­ris van de Aarts­bis­schop, en ikzelf. Het Ka­the­drale Koor zong een nieuwe Mis (Missa in honorem Sancti Adalberti) die zeker het be­luis­te­ren waard is. Ver­te­gen­woor­digers van de Maltezer Orde, de Constan­tijnse Orde en de Ridders van Het Heilig Graf (zie foto onder) waren aanwe­zig, evenals een ver­te­gen­woor­diging van het Heilig Kerst­mis­gilde dat bij­zon­der met onze ka­the­draal verbon­den is. Aan het einde van de Mis werd "Amazing grace" gezongen om de afschaf­fing van de slavernij te gedenken en als eeerbe­toon aan alle mensen die daar­on­der hebben gele­den.

Tijdens de preek deelde de Aarts­bis­schop mee dat paus Fran­cis­cus met ons verbon­den was en zijn zegen aan ons gaf.

Homily for the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time at the Ca­the­dral of St. Bavo

(Haar­lem, July 2, 2023)

Excellency, dear brothers and sisters, religious men and women, brothers and sisters.

Every Eucha­ristic Celebration directly immerses us in communion with the Trinitarian God, but also with the entire universal Church guided by Pope Francis, who sends you his apostolic bles­sing and assures you of his paternal closeness and prayer, trus­ting in yours as well.

Themes

On this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, two themes are presented to us in the Liturgy of the Word. The first concerns the conditions for follo­wing Christ, and the second touches on hospitality and welco­ming.

Conditions for follo­wing Jesus

In today's Gospel, the Lord reminds us that "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me". History bears witness that the world has always been divided concer­ning Jesus: some in favor and others against, even within the same family.

Primacy of love

But it is precisely to emphasize the primacy of love for God above all other affections that the Lord makes such strong state­ments. In fact, the central truth of Christianity is to know with certainty and believe without hesitation that God loves us unconditionally, with a merciful love that continually flows from Him through the Person of Jesus.

Mercy

This love, precisely because it encounters our misery and our sins, takes on the characte­ristic of "mercy" and shows sinners the sure path that will guide us to Heaven. But this love asks to be reciprocated, first and foremost by allo­wing ourselves to be loved by God.

If darkness is prevailing

Only divine love, poured into the hearts of believers (cf. Romans 5:5), can open up new spaces and horizons of hope, freedom, and peace, even in our days, where the threat of evil is beco­ming increa­singly substantial and darkness sometimes seems to prevail over light. We sadly witness this in war-torn Ukraine.

What we must reject

There are those who would like to turn our world into a theater of racial and civilizational clashes, of monolithic cultures and war­ring religions. On the other hand, Christians and all true believers in the one merciful God, together with people of goodwill, must reject this idea and decisively embrace the path of encounter.

Sharing

The message of the first rea­ding is precisely about welco­ming. As Christians, we look to Jesus, and in His Name, we encounter all others. This communion of grace fosters authentic coexistence, understood as the sha­ring of common values that respect and exalt the dignity of every human person, regardless of belief or social affiliation.

Welco­ming attitude

Hospitality was consi­dered sacred in ancient times. Even today, in many cultures, guests are welcomed with spontaneity and humanity. The poor willingly share what little they have, but how do we, especially in the wealthy countries of the West, welcome the stran­ger? How much do we practice selfless hospitality?

Not an island

Each of us, as a "person," must understand ourselves in relation to the Other, namely God, and to others, namely our brothers and sisters. As a famous saying goes, "No man is an island." How important it is to live our commit­ment and our responsibilities as beings in relationship, not revol­ving around ourselves, not crea­ting our own world, but being open and altruistic! Pope Francis has often used the expression "a Church that goes forth," which is very suitable for the task of every Christian: to look to others and to care genuinely about ser­ving the common good.

Faith!

But to do this, we need faith-authentic Easter faith in the love of God, which is the foundation of all Christian existence and the most precious gift we receive in baptism, through our adoption as children of God.

Baptismal existence

In the second rea­ding, taken from the Letter to the Romans, Paul does not only describe the sacra­mental rite of baptism but also a state of baptismal existence. In fact, we Christians extend, in every moment of our lives, the mea­ning and reality of baptism in the Paschal dynamic of death-resurrection: we die to sin, selfishness, the flesh, the old self, in order to rise to the new life of love and grace, to the Spirit, to the new self in Christ.

A voice from above, from within

We always need a higher light to guide us in making good and right choices and a superior strength to help us carry them out. That is why prayer is so important. We must learn to hear the voice of conscience, which is not an arbitrary judg­ment but the voice of the Lord resoun­ding in the inner sanctuary of the mind and heart. Those who have fought against dictatorships, tyranny, and injustices such as slavery, even if they did not always share our faith, did so in the name of conscience, recogni­zing in it that higher voice that indicates the right path.

Keti Koti

In the Netherlands, this weekend, the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles (1863 law) is commemorated. In your diocese, many Surinamese live, celebra­ting July 1st as "Keti Koti" (Broken Chains) day, while in your churches, the hymn "Amazing Grace," written by a former slave tra­der after his conversion, is sung on this very Sunday.

He is not frightened

We are here to draw new graces of conversion at the Lord's altar and to invoke His mercy, of which we are in great need. The Holy Father exhorts us to be never discouraged, to trust always in God's forgiveness, and not to let hope be stolen from us. I would like to con­clu­de by quo­ting his words: "The Face of Mercy is Jesus Christ. Let us keep our gaze fixed on Him, who always seeks us, waits for us, and forgives us. He is so merciful that He is not frightened by our miseries. In His wounds, He heals us and forgives all our sins. And may the Virgin Mother help us to be merciful to others as Jesus is with us" (Regina Coeli, April 12, 2015).
